Doumu, Mother of the Dipper
The cosmic mother who bore the nine stars of the Great Dipper. Depicted with four faces and eight arms, she holds the ledger of life and death, and all stellar liturgies of fate begin with her.

Great Emperor of Southern Longevity
Sovereign of the southern pole and master of the registers of human lifespan. In folk devotion he blends with the star of Longevity — the high-browed old man of birthday scrolls — granting years to the virtuous.

He Who Hears the Cries of the World
Taiyi, Heavenly Savior from Suffering
The great savior of Taoist liturgy, riding a nine-headed lion. When his name is chanted, he descends to rescue the suffering — including the dead, whom he leads out of the dark realms to the Paradise of Eastern Joy.

Wenchang, Lord of Literature
The deified sage Zhang Yazi of Sichuan, merged with the six stars of the Wenchang asterism. For a thousand years students have prayed to him before examinations, attended by his deaf-and-blind servants Tiankong and Tian'er.

Emperor of the Northern Heavens
Zhenwu, the Perfected Warrior
A prince who left his palace to cultivate the Tao on Mount Wudang, attaining immortality after decades of ascetic practice. The great Taoist mountain complex of Wudangshan is devoted to him, and he is depicted with sword drawn beneath the northern stars.

Head of the Thunder Ministry
Leizu, Universal Lord of Thunder
Supreme commander of the thunder department of heaven, whose nine thunders carry out the punishments and corrections of the cosmos. Sworn oaths are heard by him, and perjurers fear his drum.
