History · 史记
Taiyi Jiuku Tianzun — the Celestial Worthy Who Saves from Suffering — is Taoism's great rescuer of souls. His roots reach back to the Chu kingdom's worship of Grand Unity, sung in the Chu Ci hymn Dong Huang Taiyi. Over the centuries that supreme star-god of Chu evolved into a savior who descends to the darkest places: he enters the hells, shatters their gates, and leads hungry ghosts and suffering souls toward the light.
In liturgy he is invoked at funerals and at the Zhongyuan festival, riding a nine-headed lion. The Taoist rite of universal salvation — jidu — is in essence an appeal to him.
The oldest layer of his worship survives in the Chu Ci, where the shaman sings to Grand Unity, the supreme god of the eastern sky — a hymn composed twenty-three centuries ago.
The liturgy describes him descending as a stream of light through every level of hell; at his name the iron gates burst open and tormented souls climb the ladder of his radiance to be reborn.
