First Gatekeeper of Every Temple
The fiercest protector of the Taoist faith, instantly recognizable by his third eye and flaming golden whip. His statue stands guard at the entrance of nearly every Taoist temple, testing the sincerity of all who enter.

Wang Lingguan is Taoism's chief guardian — the red-faced, three-eyed marshal with the golden whip stationed just inside every temple gate. His story is preserved in the Lishi Zhenxian Tidao Tongjian: he was Wang Shan, an evil spirit of Xiangyin who devoured children until the thunder-master Sa Shoujian subdued him. Repentant, he became Sa's guardian spirit, appearing wherever the master's ritual summoned him — and through that service rose to marshal of heaven's patrol.
He is the test before the sanctuary: his third eye sees through every disguise, and his whip enforces the order of the rite. To enter a Taoist temple is first to pass his judgment.
Wang Shan the evil spirit had devoured countless children; Sa Shoujian burned his shrine with thunder-fire. Pursued through twelve years by the spirit's hatred, the master never retaliated — until Wang Shan's hatred wore out and became devotion.
The two ordinary eyes see form; the third eye in the middle of the forehead sees essence. No disguised demon, no false prayer passes his gate — the proverb says Wang Lingguan's eye does not recognize persons: he sees only the heart.
